Day Trip - Santiago and Sol de Maya Waterfall-1077

Sol de Maya Waterfall from Above

Around the East Cape of Baja California Sur is a small agricultural community called Santiago. A few minutes away there is a park, technically an Ecological Center, with a 60 foot waterfall, where you can take a dip and put your head under a 90 degree waterfall (like a nice shower – the pool doesn’t feel hot).  The water was deep enough to dive in May when we visited. A few people brought small BBQs although fires are not permitted. A mask and snorkel adds to the fun, especially when you see what looks like gold dust at the bottom of the pool. I didn’t see any fish, but suspect even without that prospect it gets crowded in the weekend.

You can drive either direction from Todos Santos since it’s a large loop. It’s about 2 hours from Todos Santos in either direction. If you head north to La Paz, you will pass the Cactus Santuary (a must see that takes about 1/2 hour and will be covered in another post), Il Triunfo (where you can have a coffee at the Il Triunfo Caffe, owned by Mark, the same owner of the Todos Santos Caffe), and Los Barriles (resort community with bright aqua marine water that attracts many Gringo kitesurfers and windsurfers).

Near KM83 take a right (if you are headed south) at the sign on the Carretera (highway) that says “Santiago”. Head a few miles to the town of Santiago. Just before a small Pemex gas station, take a right away from the town. Follow the signs to the Ecological Center. If you get confused, just ask someone. Everyone in town knows the spot. It’s approximately 6 miles to the main gate (where there is a small entrance fee) and 1 mile drive thereafter. At the end of the road, park your car (in the shade) and walk 8 minutes to get the falls where you can swim and spend a few hours. To the South towards Cabo it’s about 110 miles to the gate.

We at CalyCanto are passionate about eco-friendly travel that provides us with succulent surfing, pristine beach combing, intimate restaurants, exotic bird watching, super special sunsets, horseback riding on the beach, local tours and activities that support the local community. We believe in causing the least harm (approaching zero) while doing business. Environmentalism, sustainability and a commitment to protecting the natural environment through activism are part of our mission as we work to continually reduce our carbon footprint. We hope you'll follow our adventure here, on Twitter and on Facebook while you enjoy your coffee (or tea) or drink a Pacifico (if you've already made it here). If the tequila gets passed around the table too much, gringos might try and spell CalyCanto like calicanto, calecanto, or cal y canto. However you spell it, you are always welcome at Calycanto Casitas. Thank you for visiting.
