How Does One Get To Todos Santos and Around Baja California Sur?

The easiest access to Todos Santos is from either the La Paz or the San Jose del Cabo airports. There are regular flights with Aerocalifornia, Aeromexico, Mexicana, Alaska, America West, Delta and United connect Los Angeles to San Jose del Cabo (airport code SJD) and La Paz (airport code LAP). Flights are more regular to Cabo, and tend to be a little cheaper for that reason. The cost for direct round trip tickets from LAX for both destinations starts at around $300, but it is possible to find discounts throughout the year.

The distance between San Jose’ del Cabo Airport (SJD) and Todos Santos is approximately 75 miles, about 1.5 hours of by Highway 19 (saving about 15 minutes using the toll road). From La Paz Airport (LAP), Todos Santos is about 55 miles and takes about 1 hour.

There are many things to do in the Todos area, and many require a vehicle. Plus, driving in Mexico is easy, especially in the day — pretty much the same as in the US. So, a rental car makes things easier. Rental cars in La Paz and San Jose del Cabo start at about $40 a day, excluding tax and insurance. Most roads are well paved. A 4×4 may be useful but is not essential for most areas. At Los Cabos Airport, your rental company will likely be located in a separate building outside the terminals, though some providers require a short shuttle ride. For off-airport companies, a representative will be available at the terminal. The representatives are located just outside the exit from the baggage area. Below are several links to car rental service providers.

NOTE: Budget offers 1-way rentals to Todos Santos and also airport pick-ups.

Alternatively, there is also very reliable public transportation. The Aguila Express bus runs from Los Cabos Airport to Todos Santos. The buses are comfortable, air conditioned and offer reliable and timely service. From the Los Cabos Airport board a shuttle ($12US) or take a taxi (around $20US) to the Aguila bus station in San Jose del Cabo located on Calle Valerio Gonzalez, just one block from the La Carretera Federal (the federal highway). From the bus station, board an Aguila Express to Todos Santos ($7 USD). The bus station in Todos Santos is near the center of the small town and transportation from there can easily be arranged. Finally, a private driver can be arranged for approximately $135.

From San Jose del Cabo to Todos Santos

After you get your car, follow the signs to Cabo San Lucas that gets you on the toll road bypass around San Jose del Cabo.

After about 9 miles you will reach the toll booth where you have to pay about 27 Pesos (~$2.50 USD). At the intersection after the toll booth, turn right towards Cabo San Lucas. You are now on Mex Route 1 and about 20 miles from Cabo San Lucas. Watch for Costco on your right. After Costco, get into the right lane (about 1.5 miles), and turn right at a Bull Fight arena (1st Right on map below). In about 1 mile, at the second stoplight, turn right in direction La Paz/Todos Santos (headed north) (2nd Right on map below). The sign to Todos Santos may not be visible at this intersection. You are now on Mex Route 19 and about one hour from Todos Santos. Drive carefully as large trucks, buses and passing philosophy can be intimidating. Also watch out for cattle which are often signaled by the hazard lights of oncoming traffic.

From La Paz to Todos Santos

Leave the La Paz airport, follow the signs towards La Paz. After about 2 miles and just after a large yellow arch welcoming monument, you turn right towards Cabo San Lucas on a 2 lane bypass around the west side of La Paz. This is Mex Route 1. In about 15 miles the road narrows where you will turn right towards Todos Santos. You are now on Mex Route 19 and Todos Santos is about 40 minutes away.
